I went to the meeting last night. I went as an interested citizen and observed the proceedings from a journalist's perspective. I have to say that I do not agree with Dirt's assessment of the situation.
-Justin

--------------------SPECIAL REPORT------------------------------
I picked out the teachers there to support Rohrbaugh and those from the other point of view. Those who were there in protest of the principle were spread around the room. In speaking with these people I found that none of them seemed to know Rohrbaugh or what he looked like. I know I don't. I didn't even think he was there. Throughout the meeting both sides made a little noise whether it be gasps or chuckles, but the meeting was calm and those in attendance well behaved. Two people were on the agenda to speak about Rohrbaugh, and both were calm and respectful. One was a teacher for 25 yrs, and the other a former principal and college dean. The teacher stated that, she had always been pleased with the quality of education in Union Co. and that she had great respect for Tommy Stephens, but found Rohrbaugh's actions and the subsequent punishment unacceptable. The former principal stated that regrettably Rohrbaugh had ruined his own creditability and the students could no longer respect him and therefore the only solution was for him to be relieved of his duties. He brought up the question of what would happen if a student were caught viewing porn on school computers and was sent to the principle to be punished. What could the principle say, when the student says, 'but you did it.'
After the regular meeting, the board went into executive session, and a number of parents stated that they heard Chairman Akins say that there would be an open forum afterwards. Most of those in attendance stayed throughout the executive session. Then the Channel 2 news team arrived. Norman Cooper, Editor of the NGN, immediately went and pulled the Channel 2 news reporter aside, and began telling him that it was basically much to do about nothing. The reporter listened politely but did not seem moved. When the executive session was over, the cameraman went and set up in the meeting room. Chairman Akins then announced that the meeting was adjourned. One parent stood and asked if there was going to be an open forum. Akins replied that there would not. Another parent stood and said that he had stated that there would be. Akins denied this. There was a brief outcry in which one citizen exclaimed, "Where is the outrage? I just don't understand?" According to a number of parents, theire was an open forum last month and there has been on many occasions.
The reporter then chased down the school board members who made a rather hasty exit, and spoke with Superintendant Tommy Stephens.
The reporter then viewed a copy of the pornographic email, which was on hand. He seemed taken aback. (I had viewed this email in the Sentinel office back when this issue first came up and can attest to their graphic nature.)
The reporter then interviewed the two speakers at the meeting. He then went and talked to one of the teachers who supported Rohrbaugh. Norm Cooper motioned for another teacher to be interviewed but the reporter said that they were out of time because it would only be a one minute blurb. The teachers protested, saying it was unfair because their side had not been heard. The reporter agreed to talk to one more teacher. In all the reporter interviewd two from the remove Rohrbaugh side, Tommy Stephens, and two Rohrbaugh supporters. Cooper attempted to get an interview but was unsuccessful. When asked, the teachers stated that they had not seen the email, but in this school system we look forward not backwards. Another coach said that he hadn't seen the email but he could tell them where they could stick it. The teachers perscpective was basically that they knew Principal Rohrbaugh and that he was a great principal.
In some ways this meeting was historical. It was packed out the door for the first time in a very long time and it was the first time in anyone's memory that a TV News crew had shown up.
All and all the meeting was calm. Some of the concerned parents were upset that they were not able to voice their concerns, and some of the teachers feeling very defensive of their principal, were clearly seething, but no outbursts occurred. Superintendant Stephens handled the situation with professionalism as he always does.

I haven't stood on my soapbox for a spell now. so it is time to weigh in. I do not have any children in the high school and am certainly thankful for that. If I cannot home school them then private school is the route, specifically because of this type activity. I agree with the individuals statement that the principal Mr. Rohrbaugh has lost all credibility with the students and should have with the staff and school board. How would he discipline a student if the student did this in the future? Kids are not stupid. He certainly would not discipline one of my children in a similar circumstance. This type of activity on school time and with school equipment should never be condoned. There is no excuse. The female teachers should be outraged. It is not a "mistake" , it is a violation of generally accepted standards of behavior for a teacher. I would not care one iota what type job he had done in the past because he has forfeited his right to be a teacher of children. There are other better qualified individuals to be principal. I cannot fathom any school system that would retain his services. He should do the right thing and resign to prevent Union County further embarrassment because once the media gets it's teeth into this the snowball just gets bigger.Go to Top of Page

Just curious...

IF the same email had been sent from his home on his personal computer and word of it got out...
would all of you that are now against him still feel the same??

Union News,

We must have been at two different meetings. If it is actually true that these people didn't even know what Mr. Rohrbaugh looked like, then it is an even greater travesty than I originally thought. These people have set out to destroy a man whose face they have never seen? How evil is that? If I felt it necessary to lash out at someone in the manner in which these people have done I would have found out all I could about that person before I sought to destroy them. I would want to make sure my actions were founded.

I was wondering... of the people who were there to protest against Mr. Rohrbaugh..
1. How many of you have criminal records yourself?

Of the parents who were there and who hotly opposed Mr. Rohrbaugh...
1. How many of you have criminal records yourself? and...
2. How many of you have children or grandchildren who have been suspended
from Union County High School?

Also, I believe it was a lady who was protesting against Mr. Rohrbaugh that nearly found herself handcuffed and escorted off the premises. I think I heard the officer say because he was there to keep the peace. Now that would have been news worthy and worth staying up until 11 o'clock to watch.

Many of those who were there casting stones have much greater skeletons in their closets than the principal.

Ms. Boyer (sp?) spoke at the meeting complaining about the fact that there were not enough textbooks to go around so students were not allowed to bring their books home. Personally, I think kids book bags are too heavy and I think it would be great if they did not have to bring any textbooks home. Review could be done by reflecting on their notes instead. She proposed allowing teachers more time to copy the textbooks or important parts so kids could bring them home. Maybe she has never heard of thing called COPYRIGHT LAWS. Perhaps her plan was to obtain fame at a later board meeting by addressing the board in regards to an appalling issue involving teachers breaking federal laws by copying materials that are copyrighted. I propose if she feels this is such an injustice, she could spend an equal amount of time hosting a fund raiser or a neighborhood bake sale to raise money to buy those needed textbooks instead of spending an unimaginable amount of time destroying a good man just to see herself on t.v.

I did get a copy of the North Georgia News on my way home from work this evening. WAY TO GO NORMAN COOPER! Thank you for presenting BOTH SIDES of this worn out story!

My mom once said if you argue... you are saying the other side might have a point so I am signing off because I have nothing more to say on this subject. I hope all of you research the facts and form your own opinion and not believe and rely on what the person who screams the loudest says.

I wish the best to Mr. Rohrbaugh and his family and I commend our local school board and school administrators for their professional behavior in dealing with this over rated issue.

For the "rat pack" that cannot be happy unless they are stirring up some kind of trouble in this county in the name of the "christian coalition" or "concernced parents and grandparents" or whatever you choose to call yourselves... I pray that God gives you peace and that you can someday find enough happiness and compassion in your hearts to realize that it's not about tearing down and destroying but about lifting up and finding good in those around us.Go to Top of Page

Topaz, the sanctity of ones home is a basic underlying right. I personally could care less what he does or does not do in his private home and his personal computor or who he sends it to, just so long as it does not have anything to do with children, the school or school property.

For those of you casting stones, please consider something. Mr. R did something you consider immoral and unacceptable, and you feel as though he should be removed from his current position because, in other words, he is unfit to be principal and lead by example for your children. Right? Now, please share with us some of your skeletons. How about telling us some of the things you have done before? Maybe some of those things that you didn't think were serious at the time, but you wouldn't want your children to know about. And then, we can all decide if you are fit or unfit to be a parent. Sound good?

Ginger Ale, it is of no import concerning any ones skeletons in the closet. The question is, Is it proper to send this type of materials over school networks and comoputors to staff members? He should have known better. No, I do not have any skeletons.

Dirt, what has anyones prior criminal record got to do with this? I just do not see the corrrelation with the situation at hand.

As for the record, l do not know what the principal looks like and this is not a personal vendetta against him, just his poor judgement.

Social Change,

My question was meant to be rhetorical. I am simply wanting some people to consider their position. The man has had a clean record, great support from his teachers AND students, but he made a decision that turned out to be bad. He is not the first, and certainly not the last to use poor judgement. I, for one, will say that there have been times in life when I have used poor judgement, and I venture to say it is the same for many others, though I believe I am still capable of being a good role model. We are human, and we have the capability to learn from our mistakes. Fortunately, we have grace and forgiveness when we err. I hope that many on here are able to realize this.

Let me ask this & as I understand it, this was asked last night.
If a high school student sent this same email out to other students, then what would his punishment be? Isn't there a "no tolerance" rule? How about with the administration too? Code of ethics?
As I understand it, these pictures were of young girls. Makes you wonder what is going on in that man's head.

Dirt,
We were at the same meeting. It seems, however that you are letting emotions rather than facts influence your account of the meeting, which could be understandable if you have a close relationship with Mr. Rohrbaugh.
No one came even close to getting arrested. I was standing right there when that exchange occurred. A woman asked some of the teachers if they had seen the email, and they replied that they had not and did not need to. At this point, Officer David Atkins, a very well respected and professional law officer stepped in and said, "This is getting us nowhere. I'm here to keep the peace, so let's keep it." The woman smiled politely and said, "I had no plans to break the peace, I only wanted to know whether they had seen the email." And that was it.
We can't get anywhere if we don't keep to the facts. And you're not the only one straying from them. Some of the teachers complained about the email being available at the meeting for interested parties. But at the last meeting, Norman Cooper denied they existed. At this meeting, he asked to see it and looked through the pictures.
One of the teachers said that the pictures had been added to. This person had never seen the email. I know that the email has not been tampered with.

So, please let us acknowledge the facts and move forward. The question is not whether or not Mr. Rohrbaugh made a mistake, by all accounts he did. We have all made mistakes and they have all had consequences. The sole question we are faced with is: were the consequences of his action sufficient or should there be more. Many of you have already answered that question for yourselves. The Performance Review Board will decide what they think on Thursday.

God Bless You,
-Justin

I believe if the situation is reversed and a child is caught with inappropriate material then they would be suspended (maybe-maybe not) but would not be lynched for it. Looking at women clothed or unclothed does not make him a pervert -- for most men it makes him normal. Atleast the principal is looking at women and not men. Think about that one!Go to Top of Page

I am so disgusted by the way this town has lashed out against Ed. I have been a life-long resident of this county, and I not only had Mr. R. as a principle, but also as a teacher. He was never anything but intelligent, and helpful. He gave a lot of kids the wisdom to move on and succeed in life. I feel that instead of being worried about a man who forwards an e-mail, we should be worried about the person who brought this to light to further advance themself as an educator. It is beyond me how a county can blow something like this so far out of proportion. I feel like we should be worried about all these teachers who not only have extramarital affairs, but were known to be having sex with students. We let these teachers leave the system with good marks, so that they might continue to persue a career in teaching. What, so that they can ruin more lives in other towns? I honestly cannot believe that no one even stood up in Ed's defense, at the board meeting. All people could do was run his name through the mud. And for what? What do these people stand to gain? Five seconds on channel 2. This town needs to get out and worry about things that are really affecting our students. Why worry about what a man with no other marks against him, when our youth is facing things like drugs, and teen pregnancy. All these bashers need to get over it, and worry about real issues. I know that everyone who has bashed Mr. R is perfect and has never made a mistake!

I know of several cases in high school which Mr. R. used the "no tolerance" policy and would not allow an individual (An A student) walk on graduation night because of an indiscretion on their part. A student was also expelled because of another indiscretion. Does this code only apply to our children? I don't care what this man does on his personal computer, but not on the school computer. Yes you're right about what might be going on in the man's head. Might need to check with the rest of his family. Regardless of what skeltons we might have in our closets, we are not the school principal.

However, just hold on to your hats, I do think there will be a special investigation from Cathy Cox's office.

Cathy Cox is State School Superintendent for those of you who don't know. I am sure that the group trying to oust the principal will do everything in their power to see that she does check into it. I doubt she will find it as outrageous as some from Union County. I believe that this happens more often than we think throughtout the United States -- it is only a big thing in our little county according to some.Go to Top of Page

Bojangles, please read the other topic replys. What deeds the man has done in the past is not the core issue. What he is alledged to have done recently is problematic and strikes at the very fabric of higher education without the perverted acts of a few teachers we have all read about. All those teachers were removed from the classroom so what makes this case any different?

If, as you say, teachers were allowed to quietly slip away after alledged sexual relations with students then the problem with the school administration runs much deeper than has been "scratched" so far. This may be the catalyst to search ones moral fibre to make sweeping changes.

School hours, School computer, Inappropriate subject matter, Strike three. Did he know better ? Most likely. Did he send it anyway? Bad judgement. Was it the first time? Probably not. Would there have been more if not caught ? No doubt. School hours, School computer, Unsuitable and offensive material, again strike three. Our High School principal has lost his integrity and that will be his punishment and loss for the rest of his life. Are there better people suited for the job ? Could we do worse ? Was it just a "slap on the wrist ?" How easily one can fall from grace with just one error in judgement. Very interesting reading everyones thoughts on this, and how easily we have all become judges.

LOL! I am laughin about it all now too Maddy.. cause now there rage not only against the princiPAL but now its the board and rah rah rah.. Bless.

Cathy IN MY OPINION would probably tell them that if its been to the board which contains this one and that one.. and hes been punished and it was brought back up and even the channel 2 news was not even bias one way or another... that she does not have time to deal with something that has already been dealt with not once but twice. Shes also over lots of stuff like license and incorparations.. Ive gotten that kinda spill over my kids getting offered pills on the bus.

They showed 3 or so of the pictures on the news last night.
As for the ages of the women in those shown, I would 'guesstimate' that they were in their 20's.

I do not know Mr. R personally, nor do I have a child in UCH...tho my youngest did attend there during his tenure as Principal.
I don't agree with what he did, but neither am I out to ruin his career and/or his life and the lives of his family.
I called a friend of mine that has children in UCH to ask her about the tolerance policy. It is zero...with consequences being either ISS or OSS. After the punishment rendered is served, they are allowed back into school.
Is this not what happened in Mr. R's case? He served his time...why not let it be?

We read about and hear locally of tragedies such as:
The death of a child being under investigation
Child Molestation
Cruelty to Children
Etc, etc, etc...
...but yet, it's something petty such as an email of naked women that causes an uproar such as this.

Is this "much ado about nothing" or an offense worthy of stoning? The issue is so polarizing it's hard to step back and just look at it objectively, mainly because everyone involved seems to have an agenda. My only agenda is to see that my children have wise and ethical leadership through their high school years. I firmly believe that morality is built at home, and I certainly don't expect the school system to instill it. I do however, expect them to support it, in word and deed.

The people who argue that this incident was just an indication that the man is human have lost me. Weare all humanóand we all have done things we are not proud of. Some of us have jobs of responsibiity, some of us don't. Most of us have personal computers at home, and if we wish, we can email pictures of naked busty lasses all over the globe, and certainly to our best buds. The privacy of our own homes is just thatóprivate, and our own. The school system, however, is paid for by the taxpayers, and subject to a more stringent oversight. All educators have morality clauses written into their contracts, and their is a reason for thatóthey deal with our most precious resource and need to be held to a higher level of accountability. At this point I really don't want to see him fired, I feel he has been publically humiliated and this is more effective than any official action. The point has been made, and the many parents of UC stood up said they were unhappy with the slap on the wrist that passed for a punishment. This is his punishmentóif he can come back from this and prove himself to be the man his supporters say he is then more power to himóeverone deserves a second chance.
