according to the commissioner, we won't know that for about 90 days. Until then, my hubby will continue to drive to Warne, N.C. to buy his beer. (He buys it right on the state line at a gas station there)

It has been suggested that beer licenses should be issued in a manner that will result in the most benefit to the people of Union County. Then, why do we want to draft an ordinance that is tailor made for big, foreign corporations or millionaires? Why not draft an ordinance that requires the following:(I am talking here only about licenses to sell beer to go in the County.....city can do what it wants). 1. Licenses can be issued only to Union County residents. 2. Licenses to be issued only to businesses that are a certain distance from each other. 3. New buildings must be built, no larger than 1000 sq ft, no smaller than 600 sq. feet, and located on the land owned by the holder of the beer license (building to comply with bldg code). 4. No outdoor beer signs, except one plain sign of certain size. 5. No beer stored in sight; only a sign with prices; no single beer sales, minimum sale size 6 pack. 6. No sales after 9 pm, none on Sunday. Such an ordinance would probably see the return of small little country stores scattered around the County and owned and run by people who live here full time. These storeowners would not get rich, but the priviledge to sell beer to go would probably mean that such little stores could survive and help provide a decent living to folks who otherwise might be hurting financially. These little stores could be charming little minichambers of commerce, a real convenience to folks living nearby, would probably be responsibly operated, and can you see all the advantages that could come from such a proposal? Commissioner is presently working on the ordinance. If you agree with me, let him/them know we want to maximize the benefits that beer sales can bring to the RESIDENTS of Union County. Petal to the metal, boys! |

It looks like The Lodge at Copperhead is the winner of the first license and will start serving alcohol this Saturday. Their announcement:"It's OFFICIAL!! Licenses in hand, distributors coming in with supply now! We will not be serving until Saturday - but we will have an official party to celebrate the first pouring of alcohol in Union County, at The Lodge at Copperhead on Saturday the 13th, beginning at 5 p.m. Please come and join us as we celebrate!" Mike's is still waiting for his license but his place is all set up and ready to go.(Mr. J has been telling us for years that he's moving back to the promised land. So far, it hasn't happened. If I was that unhappy living here, I'd leave whether my house sold or not.)

H Wild, I have an agreement with the mamagment at the local W.Mart to let me be the first person to buy beer ,there.I had planned to wear a gator shirt. After the horrible game the gators played last night against the chickens,I have cancelled my appearance.I burned two gator shirts and a dog wash cloth this morning. You seem to be among the few intelligent people on this forum,so I will tell you the real reason that we are heading back to the sunshine state. My wife will need a kidney transplant in the not to distant future and the situation will be much better there. If I were so unhappy as one poster stated I would have made my exit long ago.One of the main reasons I moved here was this,I saw all the colorful flowers in a cemetary on loving road.I thought now ain't that nice of the people to think so highly of the departed.I didn't know that at that time I was in need of eye surgery on both eyes. After my surgery I was able to see that the many flowers were plastic. The local people and others that place fake plastic flowers at a grave site are the same as their flowere, and that old chap means fakes.WRJ Former Gator Fan P.S.for all those that are jumping up and down with glee because of my departure,we will have homes in both states, now ain't that just good of the Blairsville Devil, staying here to keep the people happy?William R.Jenkins |

I was there yesterday and did not notice any beer or wine for sale yet. My husband bought beer at the circle K last week. He said it was more expensive than in Warne.

I heard the first baptist church and their types were placing cameras in some local establishments that sell beer. Those caught in the act of buying will be fined the cost of the beer or be ex-ccommunicated for ever. There will be plenty of elbo room in all local churches ,if this is true.WRJWilliam R.Jenkins |

WRJ, instead of spreading hear-say (rumors), why don't you call FBC at 706-745-2469, ask for Dr. Fred Lodge. Ask him if this rumor is true. Or would you prefer just being a rumormonger?GrayEagle <:))))<>< "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act." Eagle,I feel real sympathy for you. After all these years you have been reading what I post you still can't comprehend satire from factual statements. There is no rummor,it all comes from my sense of humor.WRJWilliam R.Jenkins |

Thanks for the information Meg! I was going to Ingles this am but snow started falling up here (again and again) and I chickened out. My girlfriends husband just retired and now she has him making wine bottle lamps otherwise he would be out buying "man-toys"... Must look for some pretty wine bottles. Class A Woof

Wow - thanks Coosa! I'll have to tell Avalanche and part-time neighbors from Atlanta. They always get their wine at "Trader Joes". We need their $$ up here. Soon as the snow clears I'll go check it out. FYI - Trader Joe and his wife got a divorce years ago and she got a big part of his business. Therefore he started selling 2 buck chuck to keep her settlement limited. Sorry - but I think this is funny. Woofs in the snow-
