Glenn Gooch, former Union County Commissioner, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Glenn was born June 15, 1924 in Union County to Homer and Mabel Wilkens Gooch. His maternal grandparents were Martin and Mary Jane Woody Wilkens; paternal grandparents were Joe and Cora Ward Gooch. Glenn was the oldest of six sisters and four brothers. He grew up on a farm in Suches during the Great Depression.

Glenn attended school at Mt. Airy, Mt. Lebanon, and Woody Gap Schools in Suches. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Aremy, where he served until 1945 in the European Theatre as a combat infantryman with the 4th Infantry Division. This division had more casualties than any other unit in WWII. Glenn fought in France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium. He was seriously wounded in Germany on April 25, 1945, just twelve days before the war ended. Medals awarded to Glenn during his military service include the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star.

When Glenn returned home from the war he attended school in Dahlonega under the GI Bill. On December 23, 1945 he married Leota Jarrard. Glenn and Leota had two sons, James Glendon and Stephen Douglas. Leota taught school in Union County for 30 years. She died from cancer in 1983, about one year after she retired from teaching.

In 1960 Glenn begann his career of public service to Union County. He served 12 years on the Union County Board of Education followed by 12 years as Clerk of Superior Court. He then served 12 years as County Commissioner, marking 36 years as an elected official for the people of Union County.
