Not as long as the moonshiners can buy the local grown corn.Change always comes to late for the uninformed and ignorant and in areas where the religious fanatics are in control. That describes Union County, old chap.WRJ

It is time to resurrect the old nemesis, alchol in the hallowed hills and valleys of Union Cty.
I thought the commissioners column in the latest NGN was right on the money. UC cannot keep on being an island surrounded by counties that sell and serve alcohol. The counties revenue is falling of a cliff and the building industry and local eateries are as moribund as last years Easter egg.

Another chronology is the Lottery. When the only state in the south with a lottery,Florida, little sales outlets sprung up all along the GA and Ala. border. Florida raked in millions from Georgians and Alabama folk. Then GA got a lottery, AL, SC TN and SC citizens gave GA billions of dollars in lottery money. I can remember the billboards on I-20 telling Al citizens to vote for the lottery as Al had paid over 9 million to Ga for the hope fund.

So you see, the analogy is this, whether you think lottery is evil and is gambling(which it is not) thousand upon thousands of people play the lottery and pour millions of dollars into the state and local outlets, just like the lottery in Fla depriving GA of much needed revenue. All surrounding states except Al have ( but Al has horse and dog racing and pari mutual betting, so go figure)

Union is in this position as it relates to alcoholic beverages being sold in Union. People are going to drink whether or not it is sold in Union or not. So, Union must allow alcohol and collect the revenue. It will not increase DUI's, no extra police will be needed and no increase in crime of auto wrecks.
I will not go into the details but the Commissioner is right on and he sees the handwritig on the wall.

As for me, I will vote YES to all.

Thant's my opinion, whats yours?

I totally agree with your points Shucks. When I have company come to stay with me I always have to tell them to bring their favorite beverage as I can't just hop in car and head out of town to purchase a variety of drinks - so Atlanta's Trader Joes is benefitting from sales. So many of people have moved out up here that I think the "beverage" vote will be hindered. Thanks for bringing up topic as I love to hear all sides of the issue. Yours are intelligent. 4 star woofs

I noted in the latest issue of the NGN( Viewpoints)that a learned ( and I use that word in lieu of ignorant) stated that no alcohol should be served or sold in Union county and all the drunks should leave. Does that mean that Mr Jenkins and I have to go because we may drink a beer once in a while? Let's see, we may have to just leave North Georgia so us drunks will not bother the ignorant's.

People with those uneducated ideas are an insult to free thinking and educated individuals. You just cannot spit it the wind and say it is raining, some folks know better.

It's Monday, raining and cold and is time to rant.

I know the restaurants are hurting in Union. Look at the number that have gone into and out of business in the last 3 months, namely at Union Station S/C. Without beer and wine a good restaurant cannot be profitable. Granted this does not cover all types of restaurants. Some McDonalds, 530 at last count, serve beer and wine. On a hot day in August a Big Make and Bud Lite may not be bad.

Just look at Hiawassee and Towns, nice new restaurants are springing up all around, the new Chophouse where Shoneys use to be, and several being advertised.

As the Commissioner knows, the number of drunks will NOT increase, but our property tax will. Union County revenues are going downhill faster than a rock falling of a cliff. I believe the Commissioner knows this and he needs to stand up and do what's right for this county and the people of this county. As it stands now we a a bastion of nothing and no growth is in sight.

Some nitwits believe you are automatically a "drunk" if you drink an ounce of alcohol. They must lead a very sheltered life to believe such a silly thing.

Union County will double property taxes before they allow the sale of alcohol. Give it up folks, it's never going to happen. Why punish yourselves by continuing this conversation?

That's funny, Jenkins...slurring your words, I see. I'm sure with your wit, it is intentional and you were not intoxicated at the time of your posting. I need to ask, though...

If we didn't have pasteurized grape juice, would preachers be against communion, too? Oh, I forgot the grape juice was non-alcoholic in the Bible days, as a deacon informed me:

One country Baptist told me that the grape juice they used back in the Bible days at the last supper was non-alcoholic. I didn't argue with him. Later, I told my wife this must have been a great miracle, considering they didn't have pasteurization or refrigeration when the Bible was written.

I saw the viewpoint in the NGS news about the sign on 515 at the Fannin County line. Yes yellow is the perfect color.

A caveat to this would be "Thanks Union Countians for providing Fannin with additional revenue, better restaurants, job opportunities, progressive growth instead of being mired in the morass of Union County .

Hopefully, the commissioner will do the right thing and issue license. He can just look around and see the restaurants come and go, unemployment dropping, no jobs.

Doing the right thing takes guts, Truman fired a war hero, McArthur, Ford pardoned Nixon, Johnson signed the Great step forward legislation, Lincoln emancipated the slaves in spite of the vehement opposition Eisenhower demoted Patton, and on and on.

OK Mr.Paris, stand up, do what's right for Union County and prove that you are a leader and not a follower trying to please a very vocal but vastly ill informed group of YELLOW sign poster's.

Yes, I can. It t'was Creation itself. And what do you want to bet grapes was part o' the equation?

And, don't tell me Jesus was not around for the Creation either. Either he is God or he isn't.

I had the opportunity to do an insurace evaluation on a facility that serves alcohol in Blue Ridge and a store in Hiawassee( both same corporate ownership).

One topic topic and subject of many laughs was the big yellow signs on 515. I asked what percentage of their customer base was from Union County--the number is 49%,and the ownership is overjoyed for their business and are astounded that Union does not allow alcohol to be sold. Now if you extrapolate by the number of stores that sell alcohol in Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Lumpkin, Dawson and Towns, a lot of tax revenue is lost, job opportunities and just overall sales simply because Union's commissioner in continuing to deny license.

By sticking your head in the sand and pretending that Union is a county of tetotalers and no one buys or drinks alcohol is ludicrous. This ain't Kansas Toto!

A lot of restaurants would move to Union if alcohol were sold, the lots adjacent to Wal Mart would already be sold and some much needed commercial movement would begin.

It is time for the commissioner to stand up and do what's right.

There is a billboard in the parking lot where B+w paint was located. The sign was paid for by the citizens of Union county for an alcohol free community. It's probably really from the first baptist church or another misguided group. If it's paid for by a church the message would be very fitting, since the message is don't be decieved, vote no to alcohol.WRJ

WRJ, the sign sponsors are more of a cult than a church.
The only people being decieved are the sign sponsors. It is so sad that people can be swayed in the face of what is right.

Buy it elsewhere and brown bag it. It's a lot less expensive.

Just in case anyone didn't know, there is a liquor store in Hayesville.
