URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA
424 AM EST MON JAN 19 2009
GAZ006>009-013>016-191730-
/O.NEW.KFFC.WW.Y.0002.090119T2100Z-090120T1200Z/
FANNIN-GILMER-UNION-TOWNS-PICKENS-DAWSON-LUMPKIN-WHITE-
INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...DAHLONEGA...CLEVELAND
424 AM EST MON JAN 19 2009
...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
7 AM EST TUESDAY MORNING FOR NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTH EAST GEORGIA...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PEACHTREE CITY HAS ISSUED A
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS
AFTERNOON TO 7 AM EST TUESDAY FOR PARTS OF NORTH CENTRAL AND
NORTHEAST GEORGIA...GENERALLY ALONG...EAST AND NORTHEAST OF A
LINE FROM WESTERN FANNIN AND GILMORE COUNTIES TO DAHLONEGA AND
CLEVELAND.
A COLD FRONT...WITH COLD ARCTIC AIR...WILL PUSH INTO NORTH GEORGIA
THIS AFTERNOON. THIS COUPLED WITH A SERIES OF STRONG UPPER
DISTURBANCES AND DEEP MID LEVEL MOISTURE WILL BRING A THREAT OF
SNOW SHOWERS TO MAINLY NORTH GEORGIA LATER TODAY AND CONTINUE
OVERNIGHT. ALTHOUGH FLURRIES AND LIGHT SNOW MAY BEGIN IN PARTS OF
NORTH GEORGIA THIS MORNING...TEMPERATURE AND MOISTURE PROFILES DO
NOT SUPPORT SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS UNTIL AFTER THE COLD FRONT
ARRIVES BY EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON. AS TEMPERATURES FALL THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON AND OVERNIGHT HOURS... INCREASING MOISTURE AND
ATMOSPHERIC LIFT WILL SUPPORT THE OCCASIONAL BANDS OF SNOW SHOWERS
WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF ONE TO THREE INCHES POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT.
ANY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS COULD RESULT IN NUMEROUS SLICK SPOTS ON ROADS...
BRIDGES...AND OVERPASSES...MAKING TRAVEL HAZARDOUS THIS EVENING
AND OVERNIGHT...ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS...WHERE UP TO
THREE INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE. CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO
IMPROVE FROM WEST TO EAST BETWEEN 4 AM AND 7 AM TUESDAY MORNING...
HOWEVER TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN BELOW FREEZING AND TRAVEL COULD
REMAIN HAZARDOUS THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.
REMEMBER...A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF
SNOW AND/OR SLEET WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE EXTRA CAUTION
WHILE DRIVING.

Hotdog! You're here? Glad to hear from you again after so long.

News crews from WSB & FOX are up at the Walasi-Yi waiting for the front to come in, hoping to get something.

Three accidents have been reported on 515 near Copperhead Rd, including a rollover as well as a car that rear-ended a deputy's vehicle as it was assisting with one of the earlier accidents. No injuries have been reported from these accidents.

Other roads noted as trouble spots are Nottley Dam Rd and Town Creek.

Georgia Department of Transportation has been notified of the hazardous situation on 515, but they will not be arriving there for another 30 minutes or so.

Hwy 515 just got shut down at the Fannin County line, I believe diverting traffic over to Old Blue Ridge Hwy. The conditions are just too slick for the hill until DOT crews can get there to salt/sand it. They're still reporting 30-45 minutes before able to arrive. Hopefully it won't stay closed long.

But I've come home through there in snow conditions before and I can remember how little traction I had coming over and down those hills in that area.

Word just came in that school will be canceled tomorrow due to the weather. The automated phone tree is currently notifying parents of this.

Your phone should ring with the automated message shortly. I suppose it could be going in alphabetical order. But we got the automated call several minutes after being notified by a school employee.

Update - WSB-TV also has the closing info now: http://www.wsbtv.com/closings/index.html

Marge, just got a call from the BOE..didn't get the entire message because voice mail picked up before I could answer but a friend that works at school called and said there is no school.

Prayers for all those who have to work out in this to have safe night. Specially those working the wrecks and for those who are for whatever reason driving the roads tonight.

Thanks for this information, I did not get my automated message and did not know.

Yesterday morning Richard Russell was closed between Helen and Blairsville, I had to come to work via 129N and it was fine.

My yard is fine, but the shady areas are lightly coated.

Enjoy your snow day Blairsville, I know my boy will be sooooooooo happy to hear this news, he prays for snow days.

Ta ta!
