Hopefully by now most people have noticed that the local chain grocery stores, and Wal-Mart have started selling canvas shopping bags in order to do away with the plastic bags that are so terrible for the environment and wildlife. All of the places sell them for $1.00 each, and they hold more than the paper bags do. You also, get a reimbursement each time you use them at the chain grocery stores in town. It will be so nice one day to be driving down our beautiful mountain roadways and not see those ugly plastic bags hanging from trees, and littering up the side of the roads. I challenge each of you to buy at least 2 of these bags next time you go to the store. And the nice thing is that you can use them in any store.www.scottanna.com |

Thank critter, I have several of those already and use them, but I posted this question on the other board.
The city dump/trash pick up guys will not take trash in anything but plastic garbage bags.
I am carrying home plastic garbage bags (that destroy the environment) in my purchased canvas shopping bag (that helps save the environment).
Does anyone see anything wrong with that picture?

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion. |

I totally understand what you are saying HB. My thought on this would be that the dump (transfer station) allows people to dump their trash into the crusher, rather than being in plastic bags. The same could be for garbage pickup (if they have a crusher). www.scottanna.com |

I bought 2 big bags from Target & they fold up very nicely, then I have about 4 others I stuff in one another to take to the store. Bi-lo gives you .05 discount for every canvas bag you use. It's hard to use them at Ingles in the self check though. It won't register the weight & it yells at you!! We're doing our part!

Critter, Wal mart has those non plastic bags hanging on the registers and infront of the isles and well.. they heavily promoting those as well.. I have a few that say YHC on them so I asked if I could use those and that check out lady said I could.. so thats what I am going to do. I dont know what to do with bathroom trash bags when I start thinning down on the bags from being green.. but I am for being green too!My kids love the frozen food section at walmart.. see the lights are off until you step in front of them.. then the lights cut on.. I had to say stop that a bunch.. they were defeating the purpose. :( "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." -Abraham Lincoln Edited by - daughterofconfederate on 05/20/2008 08:54:18 AM |

One thing you can do with the bathroom trash-is use paper bags as a liner-it may not look as good as a plastic liner, but at least it is being green-aware. You get yours today, keep it up, pass the word..."Green is the word"

I wrote this article a while back, thought it would be appropriate for this topic........“Green is the Word…” In this day and age of high gas prices, outrageous food prices, the threats caused by global warming, and of course low water supply it is time for everyone, including myself, to be more conscience of natural resources. “Going Green” is the phrase for the new millennium and will definitely not be a “fad” phrase, soon to go away. Living in a mountain community the use and need for automobile gas has greatly decreased in comparison to what I use to use living in Atlanta. With the easier transportation times, (to drive to downtown Blairsville from my home is about nine miles; on most days it takes about ten minutes to get there. In comparison to Atlanta, I lived 2.2 miles from my work; it would normally take me twenty to thirty minutes to get there in the mornings). Not to mention when I drive around to stores, the post office, to the recycle center, etc… takes very little time to go to each, (unless there is an event taking place such as giving out tomato plants at a local bank which makes driving downtown reminiscent of driving in Atlanta). The recent water usage restrictions set forth by the State of Georgia are just a small part in conserving one of our most beneficial natural resources. Having a natural spring well that supplies water to the house makes homes in the area exempt from the water restrictions, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be more conscience of conserving the water that you use. Some of the changes I made at home recently to help in conserving the water during this drought period are: -When running water from your faucets (kitchen and bath) to achieve a warmer temperature, place a bowl or pan under the faucet until it reaches the desired temperature, then store the water in plastic jugs for drinking, or cooking needs. By doing this you can conserve about one hundred gallons of water per month! -When rinsing vegetables, use the same method as above, but use the water for watering plants. -Fill two one quart mason jars with small rocks or pebbles, cap them, and then place them in your toilet tank. This method can save about fifty gallons of water per month in a small family household. -Water outside plants in the morning, or late in the evening. This will help in preventing the water from evaporating before it reaches the plants’ root system. -Wash dishes by hand in your sink. Do not drain the water after washing and rinsing! Save the water for watering plants. A small amount of dish detergent in the water will help plant roots to more effectively absorb water. After vegetables have begun to appear in your plants don’t use soap water to water them, or you may find when eating a tomato you begin to blow bubbles. The fruit will actually pull the soap from the roots, so use clean or fertilized water after fruiting begins. -Mulch and newspaper all of your plants, the mulch on top of the newspaper will help tremendously in retaining the water for absorption. -Locate the condensation drain from your air conditioner, drain into buckets for watering your plants. -Sweep or use a blower to clean your sidewalks and driveway rather than hosing off with water. Resources are abundant in this day and age of the internet for “greening” your mindset, and changing your way of living. Just go to Google.com and type in the word “greening.”

Be really careful with paper sacks from the grocery, that is where some roaches come in. Don't know what others think, but that is what I have heard and learned form experience. I use to have them double bag my cold and frozen items in brown bags and liked to have never gotten rid of the roaches, now I don't allow any paper sacks in my house.
DOC I can't blame your kids at all, me and lilred both are guilty of doing that. When no one is looking we practice our runway walk and wave.
Does any one compost? I use chicken and rabbit fertilizer as an "organic" fertilizer and have no issues with bugs, critters or plant problems. My plants and flowers are huge.
Lilred and I both practice "green tactics" she even has her own little green bag for stuff she get's.
Didn't know about the bag discounts, but will certainly start utilizing them.
Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion. |

good point about roaches HB. How about using cleanable plastic liners in trashcans in bathroom/kitchen etc... then emptying the trash into paper bags that are kept OUTSIDE in a bin. That way the roaches never have a chance of coming inside your house.

Its true Critter.. My boys had each gotten some money for Easter.. they wanted new movies.. we do not have cable or dish.. so they went to get themselves movies.. with us.. After looking at all that they did... I was very proud. Lilun picked out All About Garbage and Recycling.. its put out by GT MEDIA.. He chose this over ALL the others at Walmart because.. He liked the dump truck on the box. His daddy also has a best friend who has a major garbage pick up service in the next county.. but mainly for the truck.. He and all of us have watched this movie several times.. Thing is, they show all sorts of recycling that Blairsville has not seen yet because our " recycling center " is not like the ones in major cities as shown on here.. but its put a thought in the RIGHT DIRECTION.. Ill be honest with you, I was really raising an eyebrow cause Scooby Doo #2 was pretty cool looking.. but I am glad that he chose the one he did.. They even bought their newest car from Toyota.. a Camry Hybrid!"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." -Abraham Lincoln |

Well you get a pat on both sides of the back my friend.. and I was wondering how that Toyota was working out for you.. it sure is pretty and they go forever and ever even if they arent Hybrids. My inlaws and my "family" neighbor was using the Green Mountain Recyc. man.. but he has been behind due to economical expenses my inlaws said.. thats a shame.. he advertised that he would pick up for free.. and I know that my inlaws arent loaded with money.. but I asked them to offer him gas money or a donation to help him out cause not everything is free in that business and not everything gives MONEY back in it.. I hope that he can get started back up.. cause it was a good thing.. very good. My "Family" neighbor offered to let us put ours in her horse trailer and I thought that that was very generous. I know that my inlaws went and bought special trash cans (huge ones) and have been maintaining recycling.. Scott, sincerely my friend.. THANK YOU.. you got me reved up!lol Imagine all those who read.. and thats why I enjoy your articles.. I may not follow on where you are until you advise.. but I do enjoy the friendship and the talents God has surely instilled in you.. and then promptly managed to have one covered with milk inside from a leaky carton
eeeewwww - that could be stinky later I thought! But actually, it was easy to just wash it out and let it air dry...
