These are posted by machines - not by people. The machines constantly search the Internet and attempt to post to every website they find that they are able to access. The forum software we use was written before this was a common problem, and so we are working on an upgrade to it that will stop or slow their ability to create new member accounts.

Well not really machines...but what ya call "BOTS"...which are Internet programs that are programmed to act like people. These programs will log in and post like a person to propagate the programmers ideals or ideas...(Which are mainly Advertisements). The most prevalent preventive measure is the thing most of yall have prolly seen being the "type what you see" thing....which looks like an odd pic of numbers and letters askew with lines running through them...this prevents the "bot" from identifying the numbers and letters accurately, and then creating a faulse account. wu

Yes, we'll be launching a new sign up page in a few days which incorporates what Wu describes. These pictures are calleda "CAPTCHA" - which stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". We already use a primitive one on our Website sign-up page (http://www.blairsville.com/websites/)- which helped slow down some problems there, but is too easy for long-term use.
More information on CAPTCHA can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha
We chose the word "machines" since it probably is easier to understand for most people who aren't as familiar with the technology terms.
We'll need some testers for the new sign-up form - let us know (email us) if you'd like to give it a try. |

Welcome Beta Testers!
Here are the instructions - you'll be receiving emails with the URL separately.
Please go to the link in the email you will receive. Try to sign up - try anything - an existing username, a new username - whatever you want to try. In the end, though, make sure you choose a new username and complete the sign up process.
Once you've successfully signed up, come to this topic and post that you've succeeded in signing up and that we can delete your new user account. We'll have to delete the message you posted too, so don't be surprised if it goes away.
Thanks for all of your help, and good luck with testing it. |

Looks like I was able to sign-up ok. However the CAPTCHA was kind of hard to read. I had to guess at one or two characters.

I missed the CAPTCHA on purpose twice and made the correct choice the third time.
And I don't care |
