I read a letter to the editor in last weeks Towns County Sentinal about the planned freeway thru the mountains. It was a good areticle and brought up some insightful thoughts.I stated in a prior post that this road would be constructed, because Atlanta metro wants it and what Atlanta wants, it gets. This road is back on the front burner, especially with all the growth in the Metro area and the pressure from the federal government to relieve traffic and clean up the air in Atlanta. This road will be built to relieve traffic from Savannah to Knoxville and the eastern seaboard and to bypass Atlanta. Regardless of what local government officials say, the consensus is they know it is being planned and will be built. Like it or not, it is coming. Probably not in my lifteime, but it is coming. Just something to ponder on a hot day. Shucks |

i am all for a highway that would bypass going thru Atlanta! That would be faster and so much nicer, than having to deal with all that traffic!

I do my darnedest to NOT go to or through Atlanta! I know a lot of people are not happy about the freeway cutting through the mountains and I know I would not want it through my back yard, but I am sure it will be coming eventually. One more reason for planning for the future so this area doesn't turn into just another little tourist trap.

Shucks, I would rather be pondering the water level in the lake but since you brought up the topic of a new highway. Is this going to happen in the next 5years, 10 years? whats your guess? And do they know where in the mountains it would cut through

http://www.stopi-3.org details all of the possible routes the road may take. While I am all for an interstate highway that connects I-85 to Augusta and then on to Savannah, I fail to see the logic of continuing the route all the way up to Knoxville. The Northern Arc is back on the front burner too, which is a much more feasible way for truckers to bypass the Atlanta traffic from the north side. Edited by - Chris on 08/13/2007 12:13:59 AM |

Ahdah,I think it will be at least 5 years before preliminary construction. Completion date depends on funding.Chris, Yes, I am for an interstate from I-85 to Augusta, which is long overdue. I also agree about a corridor from Savannah, Augusta up northward, but I to fail to see the logic of proceeding into Knoxville. It would appear a more eastward route would be more feasible. The Northern Arc is sorely needed, now!!! I hope this gets going immediately. Shucks |

Exactly. There's already an eastward route, it's called I-40. How about building an interstate from Hendersonville to Augusta? That would make a lot more sense in connecting Oak Rid...I mean, Knoxville, to Savannah. Here's an update (http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2007/08/13/daily27.html) on funding for the Northern Arc. Looks like it's picking up steam, this time as a toll road.
