Well, I can only say that if you are driving in Towns County and a hearse pulls up behind you it may be the acting sheriff and not the grim reaper, or it may be both.

Supposedly the coroner moves up to the acting sheriff position until the position can be filled.

Honeybee,

In the skullbunny link you provided a few days ago, the blogger pointed out that the two newspapers in Towns County handled the story differently.

The Towns County Sentinel printed the facts about the deputy's arrests, and then went on to state that all other stories are "NOT TRUE".

Whereas the Towns County Herald printed the facts about the arrests, and then went on to say that, so far, all other stories have not been proven, or words to that effect.

Big difference in journalistic professionalism!

Similar to the story in the North Georgia News last week. All other rumors are unfounded and not true, but yet we knew of Sheriff Eller's upcoming arrest before the papers.

I am starting to lean to the idea that several local newspapers are exactly not "true journalism" but "bought and paid for journalism".
Might need to post that in the HHMMMM topic.

With SOME of the RUMORS turning into FACTS I guess b.com will have to change it's header's to "Read It Here First"

;)

I believe the current GBI investigation might cause a lot of internal housecleaning to go on in all law enforcement departments in rural areas.

I am not so concerned with the slowness of the papers in confirming facts. After all, they must differentiate between confirmed facts and rumors. That is just being responsible.

But I am concerned with flat out statements that rumors are "NOT TRUE". That is shoddy journalism and an insult to their reader's intelligence.

Unless they are on the inside of the investigation, which they are NOT, then they have no idea whether any particular rumor will turn out to be true.

So, they have no business declaring all rumors to be "NOT TRUE". Besides, it makes them look like they are protecting people who may be criminals.

I'm glad I don't subscribe to the Sentinel, and now I never will.

The South Carolina story says that this was all about jealousy. However they've missed the major issue, as I see it.

Osborne, Collins and others knew that they would get away with it-KNEW IT- because, as the report indicates, the Sheriff would hide evidence and thwart honesty.

Considering how closely entertwined Towns and Union law enforcement are as both operate in the Enotah Judiicial District, how can anyone with a grain of sense even consider that Union Deputies don't know the same thing!

Did the barn also burn down because of jealousy?

At the bare minimum, these men are not fit to be in law enforcement, if they are criminals themselves.

Isn't "attempted murder" the highest class of criminal behavior?

Just think; these are the sorts of people who were authorized to arrest citizens who broke the law.

Story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2007/07/31/sheriff_0731.html

In early July, Gary Dean told Sheriff Eller he was afraid of Deputy Osborn because of his relationship with his wife. This was before the shooting.

I find it humorous that THE FORMER SHERIFF appeared in the AJC to comment on the black eye of law enforcement.

A husband in FACT place a sign on the door of their restaurant business in Hiawassee announcing "CLOSED DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY WIFE IS S****NG (insert sheriffs name here)"

I always liked him in fact of his short comings, he was very blunt and to the point and always made me laugh when he came into the ER of the Towns County Hospital (at that time).

This is not a rumor, this is a fact

Just ask anyone who has lived there awhile, cause it's very true.

Atlanta Journal Constitution Article:

http://www.ajc.com/search/content/metro/stories/2007/07/31/sheriff_0731.html

Honeybee, what you said just rang a bell. I could not remember the name of the former sheriff, but as I mentioned in an earlier post . . . when I moved to Towns County in early 2005, one of the first newspapers I bought had a letter to the editor saying that they were glad that Rudy Roach would not be sheriff anymore, because people were afraid of him!

There were no details given in the letter and I was too new to the area to have heard anything.

The restaurant owner story also sounds very very familiar, yet I don't remember where I would have heard it.

Towns County = Peyton Place

Gunter wouldn't be my choice for the interview either... although I believe three things that he said,

1) he worked closely with Eller for a long while.
2) he's "saddened" they got caught.
3) he doesn't know what to do next.

A good DA would not only know, he would have already done it.

Well all of this publicity could have 2 sides.

The Good Side is people will be afraid to come here and growth and change will stop.

The Bad Side is that they all will come to look at us, like monkeys in the zoo and decided they like it and stay with change and growth marching on.

All of you re-located people need to know that since you live here now, people monitoring these news post Will group us all together as lifers here forever and will think you all are just like us, Redneck and illiterate.

WELCOME TO THE COUNTRY CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Maddy,

But the lyrics in my head are about a cheating wife, a gun, a murder, and a big-bellied sheriff.

Ha!
