I just heard that the Towns County Sheriff and two of his deputies have been arrested. The two deputies shot up someone's house on July 9th and the sheriff was helping them hide evidence. Is this true? Has anyone else heard this? I did not get to watch the news tonight. YIKES.....what is this world coming to????

Two Towns County Sheriff's Deputies have been arrested for a firing as many as ten shots into a Hiawassee house. Nobody was struck by the gunfire. Charges are aggravated assault, making false statements, and violating their oath of office. The Deputy Chief was also charged with tampering with evidence and influencing a witness.

More on the story is available here: http://www.wolfcreekbroadcasting.com/artman/publish/article_8409.shtml

You are right, Three Officer have been arested including the Sheriff Rudy Eller. It has been a long time coming. I am glad that they got caught. I As A Law Enforcement officer myself I think that any one who takes advantage of their Police authority needs to have the full extent of the law brought down on them. I hate it for the people of Towns county, but maybe they will get a honest Sheriff out of this.

I am happy to hear they are both in jail! Would not be safe for people like that to be running around...especially carrying guns.

I dont know if "spooky" is meant to be honest or facetious.

At any rate, these people are a clearly a danger to themselves and others. The charge should be ATTEMPTED MURDER. If there was ever a case for a bond of $500,000 to $1,000,000, this is it.

edited to add: As per the Sentinel article there is no such charge as "attempted murder" in Georgia.

Rudy Roach? I hope that's not right.

So much for the hope of an honest Sheriff.

My peeps at WSB say that the GBI isn't confirming Eller's arrest as of 5:00 pm today.

Its not you Star. I'm just illustrating a tad of discrimination. I am very careful to follow MEMBER-PARTICIPATION AREA USAGE POLICY, (Part II, Section 3) relating to events which happened to me personally are acceptable to post. Of course the admins of this site have posted that they can remove anyone for any reason - including fear, complicity, etc. - and they exercised that right.

Not every valid substantiated fact has a webpage.

Back to the issue at hand... I heard something about a barn buring sky-"high" last night. Another about two canaries singing and 40 warrants being served today. I just wondered what the real scoop is?

I believe you, of course.

It's not discrimination. We've got lives too. I was at a client's until 8:30pm, then visiting at a friend's house (family, actually), now finally home.

We agree with you, if it makes you feel any better. We would have gone that direction anyway, because as you pointed out yourself it's in the rules. We're not averse to letting a developing story percolate a tad to see if more is added to the original story though.

So, to the rest of you, back up the Eller accusations with a link or please remove them until more tangible supporting evidence can be linked to.

Mr. Bill, I will delete my post out of respect for you until I can post a link (if that will ever happen) to what I said.

We asked a friend at WSB to cut through the rumors about Eller. The link is posted below.

Eller says he's not resigning... but he should. At a minimum, he is not intellectually capable of making good hiring decisions. This didn't just involve one deputy; it involved two. That alone is a high enough percentage of his tiny staff to indicate a mindset. More significantly, the leader was his hand-picked Chief Deputy. Obviously there was talk among at least two or more before this happened. I'm not naive enough to think that other deputies, maybe even Eller, didn't know what was up and did nothing - or worse.

If he were serious, Eller would take steps to assure the public that his department has the capacity and the willingness to prevent their own psychotic deputies from from committing drive-by shootings. These guys would have been arrested immediately-not a day later. Instead, his office effected a day-long delay which allowed plenty of time to cover-up important evidence.

Assuming that he didn't know in advance, Eller wasn't serious enough to have policies in place to weed out dangerous psychokillers (alledged, but caught in the act) from the Sheriff's department. That - and other things I know about his past - is why I believe Eller isn't morally fit nor bright enough to be a chief executive of anything more complicated than a sandbox.

Does it matter that no one died? I don't believe that it does. They didn't care whether there might have been children in that house. If they had suceeded we'd be talking about two murderers who were hand-picked by Eller.

I haven't forgotten that Eller has been quick to falsly accuse innocent people of attempting to do what his own chief and senior officers actually did. His judgement is exactly backward from that of a good decent Sheriff.

Towns and Union citizens deserve assurance that there are no drive-by hit men on their payroll. I know otherwise.

I just saw this story this weekend. Hard to believe I live in Towns County and didn't even know this happened.

Naturally, I grabbed the local newspaper which came out on Thursday (I hadn't had time to read it) and read the whole story.

No motive was given or speculated upon, not even by the victims. Only the sequence of events were reported.

The shooting happened on July 8 near midnight.

Evidently, the building they shot into is a workshop with an apartment attached. The owner was in the bedroom of the apartment and an employee was working in the shop.

The employee in the workshop saw the lights of a car pass by, going uphill to the dead-end road. It turned around at the neighbor's house, then made a complete pass by the building heading back to Highway 75. A very short time later, he heard the car coming back again. The first two shots were fired into the shop - aiming at a flashing light they keep in the window to scare off thieves.

The remaining shots went into the apartment. The owner was watching TV in the bedroom when he heard two shots. He thought something had blown up. But when he heard bullets come through his door, he jumped behind the bed. He said he normally sits in the kitchen, where most of the shots landed.

A jelly jar was shattered. Two bullets went through the bedroom door. One bullet was stopped by the metal door of a dryer. The shower was also hit.

Casings were found near the mailbox. 14 shots were fired in total by a 40-caliber gun.

The owner of the building moved here in 1979 and says he never had a problem until lately. The employee has lived here most of his life.

Quote: "The owner contacted the Towns County Sheriff's Department immediately after the shooting. Two officers responded to the call. The next day, Towns County Investigator Robert Kern and Captain Pat Williams inspected the scene."

All these facts were from the Towns County Herald - Thursday, July 19, 2007 edition.

HOLY COW! DID THESE GUYS THINK THEY WERE GOING TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER? WHAT IS THE MOTIVE?

When I first moved to Towns County in early 2005, I saw something in the newspaper about a new sheriff being elected, and there was a letter that referenced the previous sheriff. It mentioned that people were afraid of the previous sheriff and that they hoped the new sheriff would change all that.

I thought that letter in the newspaper was very disturbing at the time, but never heard another word about it.

Well, evidently, the new sheriff isn't exactly what people were hoping for either?

I am going to start asking around about this story. I am too new to the area to know anything. Even my neighbor across the street, who has been here for years, is a fountain of knowledge.

Towns County has never "felt" like a place where the police were out of control. They seemed pretty laid back, which I chalked up to this being such a retirement town.

I guess looks can be deceiving, eh?

I'm dying to see the "Letters to the Editor" section when the next newspaper comes out.

That will be interesting.

I wouldn't count too heavily on the "letters to the editor." Anything of substance (pun intended) is usually squelched.

It isn't simply "good ole boy" law enforcement. Anywhere else in Georgia this type of evil isn't tolerated. Frankly, all Georgians deserve honesty and transparency in both law enforcement and reporting.

The first amendment's entire purpose is to protect the free speech and right of assembly of whistle-blowers and those who have the courage to speak up against the evil and corruption in your government.

I learned the hard way that in Towns and Union there might as well be no first amendment (or fourth either for that matter.)

Actually I have... but thats another issue. There are fine upstanding law enforcement officials all across this State.

More on point here-I just hope folks realize that the money always goes someplace. It has to be laundered (legitimized) in order to fly under the DEA/IRS/ATFE radar. Who do ya'll think has been laundering the money?

The arrests to the best of my knowledge are related to domestic problems between one of the deputies and the occupant of the place that was shot at. This is the same old story that has been carried out for all time since UGG caught UGGet with OLF back in the cave and started throwing rocks.
