Is it my imagination or is it for real. Has anyone noticed the number on businesses that are closing or are for sale in Union and Blairsville?

Based on the number of post, a lot of people are shopping outside the county which results in an "outflow of dollars". The reason being is people have a limited amount of retail trade stores in Blairsville.

Answer this:
1. How many of you purchased your "back to school" clothing in Blairsville?
2. Where do you purchase men's clothing and shoes?
3. Where do you purchase electronics, such as TV, computer's?
4. Where do you purchase new vehicles(other than Chevrolet)?
5. Wal Mart says they have increased drug sales by 41% nationwide, if this demographically correct, then 41% of medicene purchases have gone out of Blairsville.
6. I note numerous post state where restaurants outside Blairsville have been visited weekly.
7. I know beer and alcohol is purchased elsewhere.
8. Entertainment--theatres etc. all outside Blairsville.

The purpose of this is not to denegrate Blairsville, but to emphasize that Blairsville needs retail as it is becoming stagnant.

Contrary to some thinking, Wal Mart actually increases retail stores, helps smaller stores and keeps more money at home where it belongs.

Some clothes for my kids are done in town.  Family dollar, Mountain Crossings, Thrift Stores.

Dining, mostly cobbs mill, & Monte Alban.

Beer, Wine...Hiawassee.

Men's clothing & shoes, Mountain Crossings (he gets a great deal)

Cars-Blackwell's in Blairsville

Recent Printer-Radio Shack, Blairsville.

Entertainment-Plenty of free trails around here to hike.  Someone please purchase the movie theatre here so we can have movies again, & don't serve rancid butter!

I do a lot of shopping here in B'ville, but I do a lot of it in other places as well.  I won't step foot in a Wal-Mart until they change some ways of theirs.  I'd rather give money to the local owned businesses, rather than see it in their pockets.

Maddy, my point exactly.

Does Mountain Crossing sell men's dress suits, shirts and shoes.

Teen age girls want Abercrombie fitch, Old Navy, Gap. Only place to get them South on 515.

A lot of people, including me dine at Cobb's Mill, I do not eat anywhere else, but I do eat at Longhorns, Outback amd Ruby Tuesday.

My point being, we need diversity and need it now. Hopefully, Wal Mart will be here soon.

Answer this:
1. How many of you purchased your "back to school" clothing in Blairsville?

Lil Man thinks he has to have Hollister/Abercrombie/so Ebay for the most part. He buys his other stuff at the Mall.
2. Where do you purchase men's clothing and shoes?

Hubby doesn't care. Walmart, Goody's.

3. Where do you purchase electronics, such as TV, computer's?

I do buy computer parts here locally when I need them.
4. Where do you purchase new vehicles(other than Chevrolet)?

I actually bought my Dodge Stratus from Blackwell's.
5. Wal Mart says they have increased drug sales by 41% nationwide, if this demographically correct, then 41% of medicene purchases have gone out of Blairsville.

I am a CVS person. I know them. I trust them. And they have always done me right.
6. I note numerous post state where restaurants outside Blairsville have been visited weekly.

Eating out is not an issue with us. Hubby travels on the road all day. So we normally eat at home.
7. I know beer and alcohol is purchased elsewhere.

I don't drink. Yes, I am Baptist. And No, I don't attend the Big Church.
8. Entertainment--theatres etc. all outside Blairsville.

I have Dishnetwork...so IF I HAVE TO WATCH something...I can buy it. But we normally never do that.

I know I no longer live in Blairsville, but shopping was one of the problems we encountered.

I hated to make the drive to Murphy to go to Wal*Mart, but then again, I hated paying the extra money for groceries there in town. Same thing for medicines. CVS charged a bit over double for one of Sonny's med's vs Wal*Mart, and that was BEFORE the $4.00 deal went into effect.

Specialized medical care was another problem we encountered. There was no pulmonary specialist in Blairsville. If I remember correctly, the closest one we found was in Murphy.

I was lucky in the fact that I didn't have young children to provide clothing, school supplies ect for, but even the purchases made just for us were limited due to what was available in town.

Due to our work schedules when we were there, eating out was rare. Alcoholic beverages were not something we purchased, so no big deal there.

In many cases that I have seen, a smaller town will experience a "boom" in home sales due to vacationers or retirees. The local economy will do great for a while. Then, once the "new" locals get hit with the real problems of lack of shopping, lack of entertainment, specialized medical care, ect, they begin to slowly sell out and move on to more convenient areas. This causes a crunch in the economy. Many such places have wound up being virtual ghost towns after this happens. A town can only survive if the younger generations continue to live there. Where are all the up and coming adults going to work? live? play? shop?  Something to think about.

I buy what I can in Blairsville, just bought new dress pants and shirt and new boots at Alexanders, going to buy new hiking shoes at Mt. crossings as soon as I take time to go get measured. I buy some office supplies locally and some at staples in Canton. Groceries in Blairville, drugs and such at CVS or Riteaid. Cars from one of Jacky Jones dealerships. Auto parts in Blairsville, hunting equipment at Hughes or Alexanders.

I buy at Walmart when I have too or sometimes when its simpler. I do buy from the Bargin Barn some for hunting stuff.

I don't drink or smoke so thats no problem.

Worring about stores closing here and wanting Walmart to come in is pretty contradictory, I'm afraid that you will see more local stores close in Walmart comes. (I don't want to hash out the old for and against Walmart thing again so thats all I will say on that)

As far as name brands are concerened I wear Wrangler jeans most of the time but for many years I wouldn't wear anything but Pennys because I didn't want the big old lable on the back advertising the brand (Levi and Wrangler), I have to admit, I still like Penny's shirts better than most brands and still buy them.

Running late got to go, see ya later.

Considering the minimal income that I take in each month my job to survive in life is to be as frugal as humanly possible. I love to shope to get the best deal and that is what I will do.

I may have nice things, but I never paid full price.

If Blairsville can not offer me that, what can I do? I can only do what I can afford.

I do get our meds at Rite Aid. I eat in Blairsville some of the time, but not all of the time, variety is the spice of life.

We go to Bilo or Ingles only for specialty items, we can't find in a less expensive place. I shop Sav a Lot and I adore Alexanders.

Walmart and Goody's does the trick for us, when we're in that direction.

I am however the ebay queen and I'm happy with the bargains I get there. If there's a better deal to get I'll find it and be glad I saved a few dollars.

P.S. I tried to get my oil done in Blairsville, but that turned out badly.

Hubby rents his videos next to Downtown and I call that highway robbery, but he keeps going back each week, I won't.

Answer this:
1. How many of you purchased your "back to school" clothing in Blairsville?
Don't have school aged kids, but I shop at Cato's, Goody's and Walmart usually.  Occasionally find something at Alexanders

2. Where do you purchase men's clothing and shoes?
The few things I have purchased came frome Goody's, Walmart or Alexanders

3. Where do you purchase electronics, such as TV, computer's?
Bought a laptop at Office Depot in Gainesville... looked at Radio Shack and Walmart, though.
4. Where do you purchase new vehicles(other than Chevrolet)?
Haven't bought a new vehicle since I moved here... probably won't have to for a long time.

5. Wal Mart says they have increased drug sales by 41% nationwide, if this demographically correct, then 41% of medicene purchases have gone out of Blairsville.
For meds I need right away (like antibiotic) I go to CVS.  The maintenance drugs I use I will get at Walmart if they are on the $4 list, otherwise I use a mail order pharmacy associated with my insurance.

6. I note numerous post state where restaurants outside Blairsville have been visited weekly.
Hmmm.... it depends!  But I have done my share of eating outside of town...

7. I know beer and alcohol is purchased elsewhere.

8. Entertainment--theatres etc. all outside Blairsville.
Haven't been to a movie in years!  Lots of free stuff (Friday nights at the old court house or the fair grounds in Blue Ridge, Pickin' in the Park in McCaysville on Thursdays, etc.) Morganton Music Park most every Saturday night...

I bought my t.v. at Fred's in Hiawassee and my laptop at Walmart in Dahlonega.

I get my prescriptions filled and buy certain products at CVS.

I usually eat at restaurants in town.

I don't drink alcoholic beverages.

I buy most of my clothes at Walmart, Goody's, and order from catalogs.

I drive a used car that was bought at Lightner's which is now Blackwell's.

Umm Ladies, we need a place that sells nice lingerie and not as expensive as Victoria's Secret but just as nice. I know there is that place in Murphy but that place is expensive. I'm talking about simple items and not all the stuff that's in the back room in Murphy. LOL

Thanks posters. You have reinforced what I am seeing. I had forgotten EBAY. You provide a small cross section of shoppers but you can see a lot of dollars are going out of Union County.

PCM, your post appeared at an great time.

I did a survey yesterday in Augusta, Ga. on a womens lingerie shop.I will not name the place but their logo is " real lingerie for real women"

While waiting for the owner, I noticed several sales rack's, and this place was really uptown. One rack had "panties, 2 pair $75.00 and up.

The wall display was for Mendelsson bras, $150. and up, each.

No, I don't go around looking at lingerie stores. This was strickly business.

I don't know any woman (real or otherwise, lol,!) that would spend that kind of money for bras and panties!  I don't think their logo matches their prices at all!

When we are in a hurry, we do eat in local restaurants, but when we really want to treat ourselves, of course we go out of town to eat out. Like someone else said, "variety is the spice of life," and if you don't want pizza, chicken, or burgers, you've gotta leave Bville.
I buy NO clothes in Blairsville. It's all south 515, or mostly, internet!!! (I love internet shopping!).
School supplies? Walmart, Target!
Usually car maintenance is local. Have to say, our mechanics are great.
Alcohol? duh, Blue Ridge Ingles is outstanding. Not just the beer/wine section, but their frozen section, meat section, veggies, deli, everything is wonderful, especially with the renovations.

I have looked at the RX Wal-Mart offers online, but when I click on their $4.00 meds I just don't see the stuff I get at CVS.

Someone let me know what their Allegra D costs?
Also Claritan?

That's all the prescriptions we use unless lilred makes a trip to the ER.

1. How many of you purchased your "back to school" clothing in Blairsville?

Lilred needs uniforms and they don't have them here. I go to Wal-mart or Goody's for everything else. Anything high end comes from her cousins. When high-end but cheaply made pay's her for being a walking billboard I will them buy her clothes there.

2. Where do you purchase men's clothing and shoes?

Wal-mart

3. Where do you purchase electronics, such as TV, computer's?

Wal-Mart for electronics, Dell for PC, also Amazon.com. Do my own repairs.

4. Where do you purchase new vehicles(other than Chevrolet)?

KIA

5. Wal Mart says they have increased drug sales by 41% nationwide, if this demographically correct, then 41% of medicene purchases have gone out of Blairsville.

CVS

6. I note numerous post state where restaurants outside Blairsville have been visited weekly.

Quickie foods when we eat out, not very often. KFC, Chinese buffet, Wendy's. It seems the Blairsville restaurant and Cook's food has gone downhill.

7. I know beer and alcohol is purchased elsewhere.

Don't drink but have friends who "brew their own"

8. Entertainment--theatres etc. all outside Blairsville

Net-Flix (constantly), Pay Per View (not isnce Net-Flix), Fieldstone (very rarely maybe 2 times a year) Video store when I use a buy one get one free coupon (rarely, too far)

Still don't want a wal-Mart here, too much traffic.

Over the last two days, I have gone to numerous stores in Union County and one on the county line looking to buy a pair of shoes and a pair of boots... NADA... nothing that fit at a reasonable price!  I refuse to pay $50 for a pair of sandles or $94 for a pair of shoes!  Until retail outlets carry the items we need at prices we can afford, we are forced to take our money out of the county!

Maddy she moved her shop to 194 Murphy Hwy. I found this on Blairsvillenow.com. I think it's her that owns that website.

as im not that mutch in bville, i try to do my shopping there as i can. last summer i was many times in bilows, the italian dely, got an haircut at king kuts and got my car fixed by arnes. also i support the vogel sp store.

my timetable did not allow it this time to go and see alexanders, like that hidden store.

i think bville has an good selection of stores compared to what we here have. did not now that female underwear can be that expensive mentioned above, sure if there would be an store that one would be closed soon - to little money to make. same if i would open an knifestore in bville.

What do you think speaks for itself in the article you posted the link to? I think what speaks for itself is that the lawyer for the 99 investors represented by the complaint knows that the original development company is out of money and has no assets to speak of, so the only way to make any money out of the litigation is to tie it to someone or something that has much deeper pockets. Of course, the banks involved fill that bill very nicely.

Anyone can file a complaint, of course. What matters is what the judgment on that complaint turns out to be.

The 17 counts speak for themselves. Its God's work. This isn't just a filing... but as the article stated, is based on an ongoing FBI investigation which will yeild its own work product.

The damages claimed by these people, as to some local folk, and subsequently to the shareholders of UCBI, is sickening. The many good people who work there dont deserve to have their jobs jeopardized by the shennanigans of a few at the top. No one will be surprised when a large number of UCBI shareholders file their own lawsuit.

This suit is far more material than the Topix suit covered on the front page of the local paper, -in terms of its potential impact on North Georgia, its bigger news.

Here is the link to the filing. Its God's handiwork and an answer to many prayers by many people over many years. It speaks for itself.
