Young Harris College trustees have voted to start the process of transforming Young Harris College into a four year college.

More details at: http://www.wolfcreekbroadcasting.com/artman/publish/article_7562.shtml

And a report put together for YHC to consider its options is available here: http://www.yhc.edu/longrange.html

Do you know if they have a nursing program? For my daughter, not me.

I wondered about that. Its a cute school, but whats the point of going there if you have to transfer after 2 years? Go somewhere and stay there 4 years, transfering has some real downsides.

Tampa,

You can take some of the RN core classes there but then you have to transfer to Dahlonega or another school that will take the transfered classes.

If it does go four year, it will be a good thing for those that attend ... kids don't have to go so far from home, and don't have to transfer. The college I went to was a junior college when I started (St. Petersburg JC), but began offering 4 year degrees while I was attending (yes, I was a VERY non-traditional student but had a blast with all the kids!) It was only in certain fields, technology, nursing and education, at first, but has opened up new four degree programs since then.

That is a good news. I came from a college town and it is a lot cheaper to live at home.

Converting to a 4 year school will be an asset, but probably will not help the majority of students in this area. In fact it may be a disadvantage.

Currently, because Young Harris is a Methodist Institution, and a private school,it does not accept HOPE scholorship students. The small loophole is the 50 mile rule, which states that if the school is over 50 miles from a State Institution, in this case Dahlonega, then you can get a flat rate HOPE of $1500. This will not go far, when you look at the annual cost at Young Harris. You can go to Dahlonega for 4 years for just a little more than 2 years at YH.

If they go to a 4 year school, then with HOPE being in such a money shortage now, look for all HOPE money to be removed since YH no longer falls in the 50 mile rule.

Actually, this will have little effect on Union and surrounding counties because only around 2% of the student body is from this area because of the cost and entrance requirement.

I hope if they go to 4 years the college will move away from the liberal arts format and offer more science related degrees.

Who knows, things might change before thes goes into effect.

Justamom, thats the point, you "only" have to pay $2400. per semester. Other students on HOPE in State Schools pay almost nothing. Private schools are not supposed to get HOPE money. Your daughter probably falls into the 50 mile rule.

Both my children attended and were graduated from YHC; they received the HOPE. They both transferred to four year public schools and graduated from those colleges, and I assure you that the tuition fees were not next to nothing. They also both had HOPE for those institutions--education is not cheap no matter how you slice or dice it.
Currently, YHC is planning to admit its first freshman class in 2010. Education and business are probably going to be its first degree programs. Nursing is a very strong contender.

Young Harris is such an asset to this area, I noticed all the new apartments going up across the street from the college. Somebody is getting ready for all the new students that will be attending!

You are right Babyloo! Education is not cheap! Trying to get my two through without any huge school loans to pay off if I can. Do you think it will be 2010 when they will become a 4 year school or before then?

Justamom,

Yes, Young Harris College is an asset to the area. I've been disappointed on more than one ocassion to find I missed a free concert there that I didn't know about.

Anyway, I don't think the building across the street from the college is going to be for students.

I live in Towns County and they've wanted to build low-income housing across from the college for a long time now. There have been Town Hall meetings where all the home owners in Young Harris have opposed the project, but it was approved anyway because they met all the requirements.

So, I think those are going to be low-income units.

Well thanks Wildflower, I just put 2 and 2 together and figured that they would be for more students, and they may since many students are always out of money too! It will fill a much needed multi-family housing gap in the general area.

WF, low income housing across from YH, sounds like a quality plan to me.

YH question--When I was in college, a State supported institution, the town was always alive with college students, they were always on the streets, at cafe's and yes, bars. I go thru YH many times and I have never seen a student walking in front of the school. Is there a secret place they all go? Or, are the students prohibited from walking in front of the school?

I cannot compare my college and students with YH,because we were a rowdy bunch. One of my claims to fame was I was put on discliplinary probation less than 30 minutes after arrival and stayed on it for 2 years. That is not something that I am proud of today. I am sure the YH students are a cut above the West Georgia gang in those days.

Aww Shucks

YH has an enrollment of 620 students and 40 full-time teachers.
Compare that to West Georgia with an enrollment of 10,216 students and 681 full time professors.

Also relevant to the classification as a 4-year school is the number of faculty with PhD's (or the highest degree in their field): Young Harris = 67%; West Georgia = 88%

There is however one thing that Young Harris has that West Georgia doesn't: $10,000,000 in copper awnings.

Gumbee, is there really 10 million dollars worth of copper awning? If so, just how many students could have gone to school if they had just plain old regular awnings.

Gumbee, when I was at West Georgia there were 1000 students, about half of them actually went to class.Things have changed though, WG is a great school.

I am planning for my Granddaughter to go there in 3 more years. Hopefully, she will be a better student and more mature than I was. Actually, I was a trainwreck who managed to make my way through, thanks to a football scholarship.

Once in a while, I will see a group of Young Harris college roommates shopping at the Ingles in Hiawassee.

But, to see the most students congregated in one area, drive onto the campus and walk over to the green area in back of the chapel. There is a gazebo and lots of green lawn.

On a sunny spring day you will see lots of students lounging on the grass together.

The college was awesome enough to give my inlaws YHC rocking chairs for 50 yrs of service to and with the college.. My mother in law retired last week officially and my sister in laws work there now.. I am on the employee list for the book store from time to time.. if needed or better yet.. prn.. I even met Mr. Melick there but didnt introduce myself as Doc at that time.

The 4 yr college will be good specially with the new president and all the changes going on.. my husband grew up on the campus and remembers when the college was filled to the hilt with students, activity and a family atmosphere.. its changed over the years in those aspects.. I look through family photo albums and see the crowds not just at plays, and not just at special events but flocked in the backgrounds are people filling the spaces of the pictures.. hunny said that use to all the faculty lived within a mile mostly on those lil side streets in those lil houses.. and his mom and dad did too. All the kids would play together and everyone always had something creative going on for family and students..

This all has died down over the years.. use to there was camps there of many grade schools for bands and softball, baseball.. those too have became very few if any.. so it is a good choice on the admins part to enhance the program and bring it back to life as well as filling a need that is desired there for more eductaion.

The college is a great one.. one of the best from what I have heard around here.

I am not trying to be a know it all.. but with having married into a family who not only went to school there (most of them did), but also chose to evolve their life around the campus by working on the campus for 50 yrs.. I can honestly tell yall that the housing across the street was considered for faculty and the was considered for some students, its primary thoughts were based on the college... there will be a dollar general coming in there somewhere too from what my inlaws have told me.. I speak on the behalf of what they were or are in the know of and not what YHC has told me directly. From my understanding.. the apartments are not YHC affiliated or owned but was thought of for the college.. It took some petitions to put it off too.. some raised stink over it.. you see whats happening tho.. and no.. the family that I married into didnt raise stink over it.. as they too moved into YH at one point as well..

There are HUD apartments there or are they called something else now? Behind the library.. 9th district something was running them.. I dunno now..

I wish the college greatness to come from all of this transition.. they have made a way around here and brought us some great authors, singers and business folks.. This will be great for all.

DOC, you are correct. Somewhere in the past YHC lost it's focus as a small mountain college with a family atmosphere. As I see YH now it appears to be a stagnant, aging and yes, dying school with no vibrancy and life. I like a college where there is life, college kids doing their thing, activity and a vibrant campus atmosphere. YHC does not appear to have any of this.

Hopefully, the new administration will move away from the stagnant past and bring YHC to the modern era. Going to a 4 year institution will bring in a lot more students. No one wants to go 2 years and transfer. It is like starting all over again, and there is a chance some of the classes you took will not transfer.

YHC has a nice campus and a chance to rise to the forefront. Getting away from the "church" campus atmosphere will help.

I'm surprised they didn't become a four-year college years ago. Seems like the handwriting was on the wall, judging from their own internal report.

Better late, than never I guess.

It's a really nice campus going to waste, so I hope they do it. They already add a lot to the community with plays and concerts, so think about how much they would add as a four-year.
