On another subject pertaining to alcohol ... Cherokee County NC in an oxymoron concerning selling alcohol ... you can buy wine at Wal-Mart and Ingles and hard alcohol of any kind at the ABC store, but no beer is sold in the Murphy area. On the other hand, you can ride over to Andrews (also in Cherokee County) and buy beer. How can this be, since both are in the same county? I can drink 2 glasses of wine and be zonked and I don't even touch hard liquor it is so powerful, but a beer or two is relaxing.

Not from being up there, I can only surmise that the City of Murphy does not allow the sales of beer for some reason and the City of Andrews does. But I do find that kinda strange!

It's very backa**wards!! I had someone tell me that they didn't want beer sales in Murphy because they'd have too many drunks on the street. I guess alcohol doesn't do that, does it?!!!!

What I understand is that when they put it on the ballot many years ago, they said liquor and wine. They forgot to include beer on the ballot, so it is not allowed. That was more than 23 years ago. It is a pain for me cause my husband drinks beer. (One a day)

Yinyang,

What can I say? Welcome to the mountains!

I know alllll about Murphy because I lived there for three years. Yes, if you wanted to stock up for guests, you would need to take a trip to Ingles, a trip to the liquor store, and a strip to Ingles in Andrews.

While I was there, they voted down the sale of beer in the grocery store, and sales of beer and wine in restaurants.

I guess they like complexity, since they've been able to get wine and liquor in their town for a long time.

The Baptist churches in Murphy preached to their congregations to vote "No'. However, unlike Blairsville, it was never a heated debate. You didn't see "Vote No" or "Vote Yes" signs everywhere as far as I recall. It was more low-key.

The restaurants in Murphy were very disappointed by the vote though.

I think I saw on epodunk.com that Murphy does have more drunk driving arrests than Towns or Union counties in Georgia. No wonder though, with all the driving around they're doing to buy alcohol.

You can buy beer in Murphy, but you'll have to drive out to Cherokee Hills Golf Club's package store to do so. They also sell on Sunday.

Never heard of that Chris.

But I have not lived there for almost two years.

I'm so gald I don't live there I'd be so confused.

It is so hilarious how they do things over there. Somehow hard alcohol is safer than beer? But as you said above you can get beer there on Sundays.

Hopefully if you are seeking out a cocktail in NC you are not a truely confused drunk, because you'd never find what your looking for. It's funny. I just laugh about it.

I bought beer at the golf course too. It is considered a private resort, just like the Brasstown resort!

Well if you had a family who drank all three things, it could take you a mighty long time in NC to rustle up your weekend supplies.

My main question is how one part of a county can sell beer (Andrews) and the other part (Murphy) can't. I would think any vote on the sale of beer would be a county wide vote. This is what perplexes me. In the area where we lived before moving here, all votes (yea or nay) were for the entire county. How can they split it up?

Maybe they were drunk? Kidding.

You've just got to laugh about it. If the people don't care then it's not for me to worry about. If they did care about it, then I'd gather sometime before the year of 2006 they would have straightened this one out by now, wouldn't you think?

I think it just means they have funny ideas about alcohol.

Evidently they think wine is harmless, liquor is a slight cause for concern, and beer is a tool of the devil!
