Received our 2006 assessment on our property. It nearly doubled from last year. I intend to appeal and appeal all the way to the highest courts. I understand that a surprising number of citizens of Union County will do likewise. If this measure fails, then an objection to the tax digest is in order...Enough is Enough!!!

But the big question is: Did your taxes double?

By the way, if the tax estimator is correct, it looks like I'll owe around $240 more in taxes this year for my properties than I paid last year. That represents about a 50% increase in my taxes.

This is all Bart Graham's fault and he should be held accountable.

I'm sorry, but I don't live up there and there are some new folks that may not know who Bart Graham is and why he is at fault.

Bart Graham is Commissioner of Georgia's Department of Revenue.

According to his bio page on OneGeorgia, he has been instrumental in leading the following initiatives:

• Restructuring the departmental organizational structure to improve customer service and staff accountability. This initiative when completed will centralize all divisions of the department.
• The department is seventeen months into a four-phased enforcement initiative to bring fairness and equity to tax administration. Since initiated, this initiative has collected $109.5 million which is separate and identifiable from routine compliance actions.
• Reduced known and estimated tax delinquencies by 143,000 accounts and $586 million using internal resources more efficiently and collection agencies;
• At request of Governor and CFO, and using a Special Attorney General, structured and had passed in the 2004 General Assembly, commercial paper enabling legislation which when used will save the State and political sub-divisions substantial financing costs;
• Served as advisor to the Chairman of the G-8 Host Committee, Fred Cooper.

I highlighted in green the part I think TP is referring to.

Ok, so he is at fault for enforcing what appears to be laws already on the books. Do I have this correct? I realize this was out of his bio, but is it correct? Based on what I saw in Lamar's Q&A, that Shadow posted the link to elsewhere, some will have their taxes go up and some will (may) come down.

If there are laws on the books and they are not enforced, something needs to be done. If there are laws on the books that are bad, something also needs to be done. That should start with your local state representative and senator.

Good Luck on your quest to fair tax assessments.

Now I am really confused;I have never been delinquent or hardly late paying taxes or any debt;so why would my taxes as well as so many others nearly double?What will all this money be used for?

I had to chuckle with the comment about some taxes would go down for some people. Who on here has had that happen? Mine didn't.

My taxes have doubled also. I paid $1200 on my house last year and overpaying for 8 years. (they had me down as having 4000 sq. ft. when I have 3000. My tax bill this year is over $2500. When I pay on the two vacant lots I owe, my total taxes will be $3600. ( I should have said I overpaid by about $800 for 8 years in a row. They never gave me a credit for it.)That is $6400!!

We received our Assessment today. Using the estimator link that Shadow provided, our taxes should almost double.

From my prospective, that is still low compaired to what we are paying in Miami. Our lot in Union county is 3.88 acres, our lot here is 5500 square feet! Our lot in Union county does not have a building on it, our house here is 2100 square feet. So yes, there is a difference between the two places. Here I pay over $2,700 in taxes PLUS over $3,500 in homeowners and flood insurance (expected to go WAY up this year!).

I really think that if you feel that assessment is much too high, then you should file an appeal in writing within 45 days of the date of your assessment.

Appeal!!! I think that if a majority of people appeal, then you'll get the results that are accurate.

Okay now I got my assessment.

I'm trying to understand. They are saying a fair market number and 40% assessed. What does that mean, which number am I putting in the calculator?

I know I paid more and my house is selling for way more than their market number, is that suppose to be land and home assessment? The number is pretty low. I mean that's what I paid a year ago and the homes in my neighborhood are selling for WAY more than that number.

I don't mind obviously, but I'm pretty confused on the number.

What's the 40% thing for? Is that the number to calculate?

Cherry, the estimator says to put in the Market Value. One your assessment you have a box called "100% (Fair Market)." That is the figure you use in the estimator. Forget how much you paid or how much they are being sold for now. Just use the figures provided in that box.

I see than mine are about $400 more than last year.

If the numbers are not an accurate estimation what is there to try to take to court or argue? Unless they are saying your home is worth more than you can sell it for, mine seems like a very reasonably low number, so I'm not sure what people are going to take all the way?

Cherry, the Assessment is what you can contest. If you think it is too high, you can protest that. The Tax Estimator is just that, an estimator. Until you receive your tax bill for the year, nothing is offical. The estimation may be what you end up paying, but until the bill comes it is not offical. Note what it says on the Assessment "This is not a tax bill." Also, not what it says at the top of this page (estimator page)

Yes Gray, thanks!

Property values dramatically increased, of course taxes will go up. Mine is no problem. I'm not appealing anything.
