Im planing to open my Deli downtown. Is there any grant money, promotion, or other things the Revitalization program can do to help me?

Do you remember JFK's famous speech that went "Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country."?

That's basically where the Revitalization program is currently. Interested citizens are volunteering time and effort to take the priorities raised at earlier public meetings and work on what can be done to address those priorities.

Blairsville is still still early in the process of qualifying for the Better Hometown Program. Funds to help spruce up downtown buildings or improve aesthetics by moving utilities underground can become available after Blairsville qualifies, but that's still a bit off in the future.

Jean Oakley can answer further questions about the program and the future benefits. (Click on "Happenings" at the top of this page, then "Local News", then see the various pages about the revitalization program. Jean's number and Email address is there) Also, don't forget to talk to the Chamber of Commerce about their membership benefits.

Mr. Bill, is that what Murphy did? Their town looks revitialized compared to say 10 yrs ago? I am proud of our peoples for doing this!

Murphy has been working on their revitalization efforts since at least the summer of 2000. Blue Ridge started theirs in 1997. It takes of number of years for the results to be seen, but your comments and others' comments elsewhere in these forums shows that it not only becomes noticeable, but really helps define what that area and community is about.

I moved to Marble, NC in 2001. Around that time, I visited Blue Ridge and thought it was wonderful, so it didn't take them TOO long.

Murphy did change one shop at a time - some guy from up north restored a shop and made it a candy store, someone restored a section and turned it into several shops inside, Sassy's opened up with women's clothes, the rustic furniture store opened, a bakery opened, they built a ballroom, the antiques store moved down a few spaces and a children's unique toy store moved in their former space.

Yes. Lot's of little changes that have added up.

Wow. Just wow.

I finally got a chance to read all the topics under "Revitalization" and it's really amazing.

All great ideas. I applaud the person who wanted to use native plants.

I believe you're really ready to accomplish it, Blairsville!!!

I have no idea what is going into the building downtown in Blairsville, but it looks good. The change in architecture and the colors make this building "pop" as they say on HGTV. Perhaps this will be the start of something good. Other building and business owners can look at this building and say " makes my building look shabby" and they are so right on.
