Jeez.. I finally get my moped built and they ban them from the city?
Just my luck eh? I wonder if Towns County has similar ordinances?

My mom asked the Mayor about that and he said it was the little scooters that look like Harley's. No headlights and no tag. They are listed under mopeds so that's why. Sounds weird I know. He did say if the mopeds had headlights and were tagged and insured that they are street legal.

LOL! Someone mentioned this in a viewpoint in the NGN not too long ago. They'll outlaw mopeds (which after living here for 5 years, I've not seen one), but they won't outlaw the tractors driving 5 mph down a major hwy backing up traffic. Crazy!

Don't mind the tractors at all. Let's me know that I'm still living in the country. When the tractors all leave, then it will be time for me to go too because the area will be too suburbanized to suit me.

I don't have a problem in understanding Fawn's position on the tractors but yesterday I had an appointment in Blairsville with an attorney.I was stuck behind a tractor in a no passing zone for an extended period.I didn't notice a plate on the tractor and I am sure that there is a limit to the distance that they are allow to travel on the roads. My question is if that is so, why are all of these bikers allowed to drive up and down the mountain? They are utterly dangerous and turn a curve, there they are, if at the same time of another car on the other side of the road and you can't stop in time, which do you hit? The biker or the other car? They just pop up and are TOTALLY dangerous.

Block off one road on day a week and another another day of the week and let them drive freely, but not during high speed traffic hours.

Cherry...not sure if I understand what your saying. Are you referring to bicycle riders or motorcycle riders? I am assuming that you are referring to motorcycles but then again I've never had a motorcycle just "pop up" out of nowhere. Normally they are going at "car" speed. However, both have a right to the road and both should be obeying traffic laws. If it came down to a choice of hitting someone on a bicycle or hitting another vehicle in a head on crash, I would have to choose my own safety first.

I'm talking about bicycles going up the mountain slowely, slower than a moped I would guess. I agree they have a right of way, but it is dangerous. I suggest closing those roads from say 7-10 on a Saturday and there are other ways down.

I'm not sure, but they scare me when I turn a curvy road and there they are slow as molasses and someone is on the other side of the road coming down and I can not pull over into the other side to give them breathing room.

Clearly motorcycles can go the speed limit and are no threat to cars.

What mountain are you talking about? I see them everywhere especially on the weekends...going to Helen, up to Brasstown Bald, highway 180 to Suches, Skeenah Gap, route 60...just everywhere. Cherry, those lanes are a lot wider than they appear and most of the bicycle riders tackling the curvy mountain roads are over far enough on the right that you don't need to move over into the left hand lane. (Once they start going downhill, they go faster than most car drivers want to go!)

We have a lot of motorcyclists go by our subdivision on Owltown road. I guess it is a shortcut to 129S.

Mopeds with headlight, tag and insurance are legal. This is for the ones without them.

Mopeds can also be bicycles with small motors attached to the rear wheel. The motor is started by pedaling and then runs about five or ten miles an hour. THAT is surely dangerous.

My complaint is about those Dump Trucks being driven as if they were pick-up trucks, too fast for conditions and around the old Courthouse with disregard for others. Why are they not told to use the bypass (such as it is) or at least be instructed to slow down and quit tailgating the vehicle in front of them.

gray, there's nothing you can do about these dumptruck tail gaitors. They are impossible & when you try to call & complain they just reve their engines & go even faster around where you've complained about. (speaking from experience)

Am I to assume (bad word) that there are no public meeting where the public may speak? Is there no police department in the town? The list could go on, but I won't.

If you allow dangerous acts to continue without taking action, then you have no right to complain. There are many options to take other than say "Oh woe is me, I can do nothing!"

There is nothing that can be done with the Trucking co. here in town. It's family owned & "blairsville owned"!!!

Nope, Not yet. But I don't think I have ever lived in a place where the citizens could not accomplish something they set out to do. Course, I haven't lived in many places.

The exception is when the citizens of that city, state, or even, country rolled over and said there is noting they could do about a problem.

Don't know what can be done about the tailgating...I don't like it, be it a big truck or another vehicle.
As for why trucks are allowed to drive thru town...the answer is below.

quote:
Q. Why donít big trucks use the by-pass instead of going through town?
A. US Hwy 19/129 goes through the middle of Blairsville and around the historic courthouse. This is a federal/state highway and since there is not another federal or state highway available, it is not possible to limit their use.

The Gooch By-Pass, although labeled as a truck route and available for use as a truck route, is only a county road-not a state or federal highway. Therefore, there can be no routing required to keep big trucks out of downtown. Georgia Department of Transportation does have a Blairsville By-Pass on their future project list, but the soonest it is likely to happen would be between 2009 and 2012.

You haven't lived until you've lived in Union County. We didn't always have that 515 highway connecting us to the outside world. In fact, we didn't have 129 either. The only way out was through Hiawassee or over the dirt roads. And it was an all day affair to go anywhere outside of Union County.

This was an isolated community from the minute the Scots-Irish kicked the Native Tribes off the land and claimed it as their own. Few tears shed for the Trail of Tears from Union Countians. And then the "Pecking Order" was formed. And those at the top had the most money and the most influence over everything. The County Motto "Go Along To Get Along" was formulated and people knew to look the other way or to cover up various endeavors which might appear to the outsider as "illegal." Originally there were few families with many children to marry off, So the families married into one another and you can find that in this town every original family really IS related in some way to every other original family.

So, the roads get built, electricity comes to town, and life changes. But the hierarchy of who's who in Union County never changes. Lots of people know about incidents which have compromised their consciences but they are so ingrained with "Go Along To Get Along" that they'll create a new reality so they don't have to deal with real-reality. I guess it's called "creative imagination" by those who live with the fear of "Go Along To Get Along."

I was one of those who helped defeat Wal*Mart the first time, because they wanted to steal property given to the County for the good of all the County. But the UCDA saw $omething and promoted building a Wal*Mart behind the Senior Center and right next to North Georgia Tech with a little stream they were going to pollute which feeds into the Nottely River. The land was given to the County to be used for the County, not for Wal*Mart. I and others had to fight against the "Go Along To Get Along" crowd who would not put up a fight for what they knew in their hearts was the right thing.

"Oh, I don't know. The UCDA knows what they're doing and we don't want to make waves." Well, I was one of the "boat rockers."

It's a long story, but Harold Cook was the Commissioner at the time. Harold Cook is a good man. Everyone will tell you that. He just doesn't need to run for Commissioner again.

And until the "outsiders" out-number the "locals" the best thing Union County has going for it is Lamar Paris. He's brought this County into the 21st Century. You can disagree all you want about the No/Yes signs and results of voting. But one person who refused to be 'bought off' was Sole Commissioner, Lamar Paris. You gotta know he's doing a good job, everyone's angry with him.

I have no idea what this has to do with MoPeds. But I hope it answered your question.

Honoria, I worked at the Senior Center when Wal Mart was trying to come in there. Seems "someone" was trying to do underhanded "stuff" on that deal. I will agree that land was to be used for "educational, county, and recreational (for the children) It wasn't left behind for "growth" for the consumer. That was one time I was actually glad/sad all at the same time. I wanted a Wal Mart and still do but not in that area. Our Senior Citizens loved walking down to that river (those that were able) and they loved just sitting out around the little fish pond, I knew that would create an eyesore for them.

Ok, Off Subject here! Umm dontknow a thing about mopeds! Dont think I'll ever have one. Although by what we pay for gas I do believe we need one!

And them big trucks...Well, Sorry, You just can't completely solve the problem here in the county. That will have to go over their head. Our man who brings our liquid nitrogen was hit by one of those big trucks just last week. Good thing nothing exploded or no one was injured. My hubby drives one of the big rigs in town, from time to time, but his business is right in the middle of town. He HAS to come into town in order to enter the "yard" but exit's out the back and then hits the by pass. But, I do know one thing, I did call one trucking company one time, when my kids were younger, because their trucks were flying down this hill entirely too fast and my kids were at the end of the drive on foggy mornings catching the school bus, and one morning one of those trucks didnt or couldnt see due to the fog and almost didnt stop for the bus. So from then on, they did go slow down that hill. I dont think it was from me calling and fuming but because I guess they all passed the word around that the bus stopped at that time and well, If a child's life was at stake I believe I would be slowing down too!

What a load of (bleep). I called the courthouse about this ordinance and was told I would need a Tag and Insurance before I could drive my moped in Blairsville. So I call the tag office and ask what is necessary to tag a moped they told me I would need my title and insurance. So I got my title and insurance and was told by the tag office that it was impossible to tag a "moped" even after they told me thats all they needed.

I called the GA DOT (now DDS), they told me it was impossible to tag a moped in the state of GA. According to the GA DDS mopeds are treated the same as bicycles, but require at least a learners permit and helmet to operate on GA roads and highways. Also they cannot be driven on any road with a minimum speed of 35 or more. No tax. Tag. Insurance or Title required to own and operate on GA roads and highways.

So just so you guys know. You cannot get a tag on a moped in the state of Georgia, and because you cannot get a Tag you cannot ride one in Blairsville. LOL catch22 at its finest. I even spoke with the police chief, and he said not to worry about it as it only applied to the small little mopeds that children were riding in the street. He said my moped would be fine and no one would bother me. I asked if he would put what he just said in writing in case I was pulled over, and he told me "heck no" and hung up. LOL only in Blairsville. I do not understand how mopeds are more of a nuisance than bicycles, they go faster, have headlights, turn signals and are street legal without tax tag and insurance everywhere else in GA but union county.
